Maximum Leverage on Binance Futures
USDT-Margined perpetual contracts: BTC, ETH, and other major coins support up to 125x leverage. Other coins typically max out at 20–75x.
Coin-Margined contracts: BTC up to 125x, ETH up to 100x, others generally 20–75x.
But note: maximum leverage doesn't mean you can always use the highest multiplier. Your actual available leverage depends on multiple factors.
Factors Affecting Available Leverage
Position Size
This is the main limiting factor. Binance uses a "tiered margin" system — larger positions mean lower maximum leverage.
For BTC/USDT:
| Position Notional Value | Max Leverage | Maintenance Margin Rate |
|---|---|---|
| 0–50K USDT | 125x | 0.4% |
| 50K–250K | 100x | 0.5% |
| 250K–1M | 50x | 1.0% |
| 1M–5M | 20x | 2.5% |
| 5M+ | 10x | 5.0% |
Only small positions can use 125x leverage. Positions over 50K USDT are capped at 100x.
Coin Type
Maximum leverage varies significantly by coin:
- Major (BTC, ETH): Up to 125x
- Large-cap (BNB, SOL, etc.): Up to 50–75x
- Mid-cap: Up to 20–50x
- Newly listed: Usually start lower
More volatile coins get lower maximum leverage — a risk control measure.
Account Type and KYC Level
New accounts or lower KYC levels may not access maximum leverage. Completing higher verification unlocks higher leverage limits.
What 125x Leverage Really Means
A concrete example of 125x leverage in action:
With 100 USDT at 125x leverage going long BTC:
- Position value: 100 x 125 = 12,500 USDT
- BTC rises 1%: Profit 125 USDT (more than doubling your capital)
- BTC drops 0.8%: Lose 100 USDT (capital nearly wiped out, liquidation triggered)
Just 0.8% price movement can liquidate you. And BTC commonly moves 0.8% within a single minute.
Why Ultra-High Leverage Is Not Recommended
Reason 1: Extremely High Liquidation Probability
At 125x, the tiniest price fluctuation triggers liquidation. Even if your directional call is spot-on, a brief retracement could knock you out.
Reason 2: Fees Eat Most Profits
At 125x, position value is enormous and fees are calculated on that value. With 100 USDT margin at 125x, the opening fee alone (Taker) is 6.25 USDT — 6.25% of your capital.
Reason 3: Amplified Slippage Impact
At high leverage, even minimal slippage dramatically affects your P&L. Market order price differences can instantly flip you from profit to loss.
Reason 4: Enormous Psychological Pressure
Watching position P&L swing wildly within seconds tests even seasoned traders' composure. Emotional decisions are liquidation's catalyst.
Who Actually Uses Ultra-High Leverage
Two main groups use 125x leverage:
Professional scalpers: They trade on second or minute timeframes, targeting tiny price movements with extremely short hold times, using high leverage to amplify micro-profits. This requires elite technical skills, lightning reflexes, and precise risk systems.
Gamblers: They bet small amounts for outsized returns, thinking "I only lose this much, but I could multiply it many times." This approach might work occasionally but is guaranteed to lose long-term.
Golden Rules for Reasonable Leverage
- Beginners: No more than 5x — give yourself room to learn
- Experienced traders: Adjust flexibly by strategy, usually 5–20x
- Professional traders: May use higher leverage for specific strategies with strict risk controls
- Always calculate risk first: Before opening, calculate "what's my worst-case loss?"
- Leverage is just a tool: Focus on risk management, not leverage numbers
How to Adjust Leverage on Binance
On the futures trading interface, tap the leverage display area to reveal a slider. You can adjust anytime (when not in a position), and changes take effect immediately.
With open positions, you can still adjust leverage. Increasing leverage reduces required margin but increases risk; decreasing leverage increases required margin but improves safety.
Remember: Binance offering 125x leverage doesn't mean you should use it. Just as a car capable of 200 km/h doesn't mean you should drive that fast on daily commutes.
