How Are Crypto Futures Trading Fees Calculated?

2026-03-25 · 8 min read

Crypto futures trading fees significantly impact trading profits, especially for frequent traders. Yihang provides a detailed breakdown of how futures fees are calculated and tips for saving money. We recommend using Binance for its competitive fee rates — register a Binance account to enjoy favorable rates, and get the Binance APP to check fee details anytime.

Basic Fee Concepts

Crypto futures trading fees consist of two main components: trading fees and funding rates.

Trading fees are charged every time you open or close a position, calculated as a percentage of position value. Trading fees are further divided into Maker fees (limit orders) and Taker fees (market orders).

Funding rate is unique to perpetual contracts, exchanged between long and short positions at regular intervals (typically every 8 hours). When positive, longs pay shorts; when negative, shorts pay longs.

Binance Futures Fee Structure

Binance's futures fee rates are among the lowest in the industry:

USDT-Margined perpetual contracts: Maker 0.02%, Taker 0.05%. Coin-Margined contracts: Maker 0.01%, Taker 0.05%.

Example: If you open a 10,000 USDT long position using a Taker order at 0.05%, the opening fee is 10,000 x 0.05% = 5 USDT. The closing fee is the same, so a complete round-trip trade costs 10 USDT in fees.

Important note: Leverage multiplier affects position value. If you use 1,000 USDT margin with 10x leverage, your position value is 10,000 USDT, and fees are calculated on 10,000 USDT, not 1,000 USDT.

How to Reduce Futures Trading Fees

Pay fees with BNB: Enable "Use BNB to pay fees" in the Binance APP settings to save 10% on trading fees.

Increase VIP level: Binance calculates your VIP level based on 30-day trading volume and BNB holdings. Higher VIP levels mean lower fees. At the highest level, Maker fees can even be negative (meaning you earn rebates for limit orders).

Use limit orders more: Maker (limit order) rates are much lower than Taker (market order) rates. Developing a habit of using limit orders significantly reduces fee expenses.

Impact of Funding Rates

Funding rates aren't charged by the exchange but significantly affect futures holders. When market sentiment is bullish, funding rates are typically positive, requiring long position holders to periodically pay short holders.

To check: The current funding rate and next settlement time are displayed at the top of the futures trading page in the Binance APP. If the funding rate is too high (e.g., above 0.1%), short-term traders should pay special attention to holding costs.

Fee Calculation Example

Suppose you make this trade on Binance: 500 USDT margin, 20x leverage for a long BTC perpetual contract, with a position value of 10,000 USDT.

Opening fee (Taker): 10,000 x 0.05% = 5 USDT. Holding for 8 hours with 0.01% funding rate: 10,000 x 0.01% = 1 USDT. Closing fee (Maker): 10,000 x 0.02% = 2 USDT.

Total fees: 5 + 1 + 2 = 8 USDT. If BTC rises 1%, your profit is 100 USDT, minus 8 USDT in fees for a net profit of 92 USDT.

Using BNB for fee payment saves 10% on trading fees, reducing total costs to 7.3 USDT.

Fee Optimization Tips

To minimize crypto futures trading fees, Yihang recommends: hold some BNB and enable the fee deduction feature, upgrade your VIP level as your volume increases, use limit orders whenever possible instead of market orders, and monitor funding rates to avoid holding positions during high-rate periods. Consistently following these habits will save a significant cumulative amount over time.
